What the DNS propagation board does

After you change a DNS record you want to know if it has spread. This board asks the same record of public resolvers such as Cloudflare, Google, Quad9, OpenDNS and Türk Telekom from this host, and shows the majority versus drift.

It is not a global PoP network or a 50-country probe. 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 are anycast. Still, you quickly spot resolvers that still hold the old IP before TTL expires.

How to read the board

One green majority group means propagation looks done. Two IP groups mean some caches are stale. NXDOMAIN means that resolver does not know the name. Timeout means UDP/53 filtered or silent — not the same as “not propagated”.

Missing NS/SOA suggests the zone is not published. Missing AAAA is usually a warning. Add your own resolver IP as a custom server to compare it on the same board.

Frequently asked questions

What is DNS propagation?

Resolvers moving from a cached old answer to the new one after a change. Until TTL expires, both can appear.

Why is NS critical?

NS says which servers hold the zone. Without it the name cannot resolve.

Are results from that country?

No. This host queries the listed resolver IPs. Google or Cloudflare anycast may not land in that city.

Is missing AAAA an error?

No, usually a warning. Not every site has IPv6 yet.

How do I read the SOA serial?

YYYYMMDDnn is common. After a change, confirm the serial increased.

Are several A records bad?

No; round-robin or anycast is normal. Make sure each address is live.

Can apex be a CNAME?

A CNAME at apex collides with other records. Use A/AAAA or a provider ALIAS/ANAME.

How does the resolver list work?

This server sends UDP/53 queries to those public resolver IPs. It is not a global PoP network; it shows TTL drift.
