What traceroute / MTR is for

Each TTL step shows a hop. Rising latency or loss can mean congestion or distance. MTR averages several rounds.

This is the path from our host, not your PC. Stars are not outages. Check ping and HTTP separately.

Frequently asked questions

Cannot reach the last hop?

The target may filter traceroute. Check ping and HTTP separately.

When should I use MTR?

When one traceroute is not enough and you want a loss percentage over several rounds.

UDP or ICMP?

Depends on the server traceroute default. Many Linux installs probe around UDP 33434.

Private IP targets?

RFC1918 and loopback are refused. Public addresses only.

Can I see the AS path?

Classic traceroute shows hop IPs. Use the ASN tool or whois for the operator.
